A boho elopement couple standing looking out over an otherworldy landscape of red rock in Southern Utah north of Page, Arizona.

So, let me guess — you and your boo are dreaming of an incredible adventure elopement in one of the world’s best elopement locations. You’re picturing jaw-dropping landscapes, a unique experience to share with loved ones (or just yourselves), and unforgettable core memories to revisit again and again.

Buuuut you’re not exactly thrilled about climbing gear, hours-long hikes, or feeling sweaty, out of breath and exhausted on your special day. Totally fair!

Here’s the fun part: adventure elopements don’t have to be grueling. The beauty of eloping lies in making it entirely your own — whether you’re scaling peaks or sipping champagne by the beach.

It’s your day. Do what you want.

This guide highlights some of the best elopement locations that offer stunning backdrops and adventurous vibes. Even better, they let you relax and fully enjoy your day without the need to embark on a full-blown expedition. Are you in? Let’s get it.

A gay elopement couple kissing on the shores of Big Sur with a bottle of champagne.

Big Sur, California

Any number of songs about this location will tell you this much – Big Sur is like stepping into a dream. This stunning stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway (aka Highway 1) features dramatic cliffs plunging into the ocean, rugged sea stacks, gorgeous wildflowers, and secret groves of redwoods. It’s the ultimate coastal-meets-woodland vibe.

Big Sur makes the list of best elopement locations because of its versatility and accessibility, as it’s only two hours south of San Francisco. You can have your ceremony with waves crashing behind you at Pfeiffer Beach, known for its purple sand and striking Keyhole Rock, or any of the hidden pull-offs along Highway 1 where you can find your perfect spot above the crashing waves surrounded by succulents, the wind in your hair, and the smell of wildflowers and the sea.

For couples who want jaw-dropping views without the heavy lifting, Big Sur’s accessibility makes it a no-brainer. The permits here can be a bit complex, however – definitely make sure to hire a knowledgable elopement photographer who can help you out there.

A luxury elopement couple pressed against each other with the Bonneville Salt Flats in the background, covered in water mirroring the mountains in the distance.

Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah

Want to elope on the moon? The Bonneville Salt Flats are where it’s at. Famous for the Bonneville Speedway, this ethereal destination feels like stepping onto another planet. The endless expanse of shimmering white salt and the vast open skies make for a truly one-of-a-kind backdrop.

Getting married here is a breeze (literally — it can get windy!). You can park at the rest stop or drive straight out onto the flats to find the perfect spot for your ceremony. The salt flats transform with the seasons: in winter, they’re often covered in a thin layer of water, creating a surreal mirror effect that’s pure magic. In summer, they dry out, leaving the signature moon-like salt crust that stretches as far as the eye can see.

It’s minimal effort for maximum wow factor, making Bonneville Salt Flats one of the best elopement locations for couples who love a unique and otherworldly feel.

An elopement couple with lanterns at Logan Pass in Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park, Montana

Man, Glacier is truly something else. If you’re dreaming of an elopement surrounded by towering peaks, sparkling lakes, and fields of wildflowers, this place has your name written all over it. And let’s not forget Going-to-the-Sun Road — arguably the most jaw-dropping stretch of asphalt on the continent.

Glacier has everything: panoramic mountain views, crystal-clear alpine lakes, cascading waterfalls, and lush valleys that seem to go on forever. The best part? Many of the most beautiful spots, like Lake McDonald or Logan Pass, are easily accessible by car or with minimal walking.

The big thing to know about Glacier? It’s busy. Like, Disney-park-level busy in the summer. You’ll need to snag your reservation for the park as early as possible, be sure to elope on a weekday (really you should do this no matter where or when you elope), and aim for early morning or late evening to avoid crowds.

For couples who want to feel like they’re standing at the edge of the world, Glacier National Park is easily one of the best elopement locations in the country. Just be ready for the adventure of a lifetime (and a little planning ahead)!

An elopement couple saying their vows at Leigh Lake at Grand Teton National Park.

Grand Tetons, Wyoming

Okay, hear me out: the Grand Tetons might just be the most effortlessly cool mountain elopement spot out there. Picture it — snow-capped peaks, sparkling lakes, and the cutest little yee-haw town of Jackson nearby (seriously, you half expect a cowboy to tip his hat when you walk by).

Unlike other mountainous areas, the trails and roads here don’t plunge deep into the peaks, so you can enjoy the views without scaling cliffs. Say your vows by Leigh Lake, where the Tetons create a stunning backdrop. Then, celebrate by dipping into nearby hot springs or going horseback riding for that true Western vibe.

When it comes to charm, rugged beauty, and accessibility, it’s no wonder the Grand Tetons are one of the best elopement locations in the U.S.

A wedding couple dressed in black standing on basalt pillars at Reynisfjara black beach in Iceland.

Iceland

Iceland is pure magic and easily one of the best elopement locations on the planet. With its surreal landscapes of black sand beaches, roaring waterfalls, and moss-covered lava fields, it feels like stepping into a fantasy novel or sci-fi movie. The best part? Many of its most stunning spots are just a short drive or a short walk away, making it perfect for couples who want jaw-dropping scenery without hours of hiking.

Waterfalls are Iceland’s showstoppers, but the popular ones like Seljalandsfoss are often crowded with tourists. For a more intimate experience, you’ll want to seek out lesser-known spots where you can enjoy the magic without the crowds. Hiring an elopement photographer who knows Iceland well is key — they’ll have the inside scoop on hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path locations that feel as private and magical as they look.

The wild, untamed weather in Iceland is part of its charm. It might be cold, wet, and windy, but that dramatic unpredictability only adds to the epic vibe. Imagine saying your vows under a moody sky with the wind carrying your words off into the Icelandic wilderness — it’s a moment you’ll never forget.

A boho elopement couple walking in Joshua Tree National Park.

Joshua Tree, California

Joshua Tree has a vibe all its own — funky, spiritual, artsy, and otherworldly. The spiky Joshua trees, sprawling desert landscapes, and massive (and weirdly smooth???) boulders make this park a standout choice.

As one of the best elopement locations for couples wanting a mix of adventure and relaxation, Joshua Tree offers easy access to iconic spots like Arch Rock and Hidden Valley. It’s also one of the best places for stargazing or astrophotography, thanks to its dark, clear skies.

Joshua Tree is also basically Airbnb/VRBO heaven. From boho retreats to modern, luxurious homes, this corner of the desert seriously has it all. (Pro tip – if you want to have loved ones present, get a VRBO! Airbnb banned parties and gatherings in 2022.) This makes Joshua Tree ideal for stylish couples who want a mix of nature, creativity, and comfort. Want more info on vacation rentals in Joshua Tree? Click here.

A boho elopement couple looking out at a panoramic landscape at Canyonlands National Park in Moab, Utah.

Moab, Utah

Moab is a red rock wonderland with two incredible national parks — Arches and its lesser known sibling, Canyonlands. The variety here is unmatched, with countless state parks and scenic areas offering even more options.

If you’re seeking iconic desert scenery, Moab is one of the best elopement locations. You can drive to Dead Horse Point State Park for jaw-dropping canyon views or head to Canyonlands’ Island in the Sky for panoramic vista overlooks you can park at. Arches National Park’s Triple Arch is another showstopper and reachable via a short, manageable hike.

Add some fun to your day with Jeep tours, a sweet vacation rental or a glamping haven at Under Canvas, or a night under the stars. With so many options, Moab delivers an unforgettable experience for any couple.

An elopement couple sitting on a log in Olympic National Park. The groom is wearing a green suit and is kissing his bride on the cheek.

Olympic National Park, Washington

Few places rival the diversity of Olympic National Park. Its misty beaches, magical moss-draped rainforests, and serene alpine lakes make it feel like several destinations in one.

Olympic National Park is undoubtedly one of the best elopement locations in the Pacific Northwest. Begin your day at the Hoh Rainforest, where an easy loop trail winds through ancient, moss-covered trees. Then, head to Ruby or Rialto Beach for rugged sea stacks and crashing waves. Finally, wrap up at Lake Crescent, where crystal-clear waters reflect forested mountains.

For couples who love variety, this park is perfect for a road-trip-style elopement. You can visit multiple stunning locations in one day without long hikes. Plus, you might run into a Bigfoot!

A couple eloping at Cannon Beach in Oregon at dawn. They are holding lanterns and walking towards Haystack Rock.

Oregon Coast

The Oregon Coast offers cinematic beauty, with moody skies, rugged cliffs, and beaches that stretch endlessly. Its diverse landscapes make it one of the best elopement locations for adventurous couples.

Cannon Beach, with its iconic Haystack Rock, is a favorite spot up north along with the nearby Ecola State Park. Farther south, Samuel H. Boardman Scenic Corridor features dramatic cliffs and secluded beaches. For something whimsical, Thor’s Well or Cape Kiwanda offer unique backdrops. But really, you can’t go wrong with any section of this freaking spellbinding shoreline.

What makes the Oregon Coast even better is its accessibility. Most spots are a short walk from parking areas, allowing you to enjoy the scenery without strenuous effort. Pair your elopement with a stay at a seaside cabin or boutique hotel for a relaxed and magical experience.

A gay elopement couple embracing at sunset at Horseshoe Bend in Page, Arizona.

Page + Lake Powell, Arizona

Page, Arizona, is a hidden gem for couples seeking a mix of iconic scenery and unique activities. One of the most famous spots here is Horseshoe Bend (pictured above), where the Colorado River curves around a massive sandstone formation. The short, easy walk from the parking lot to the overlook makes this a perfect spot for a ceremony or photos.

Another must-see in Page is its slot canyons, like the world-famous Antelope Canyon. You can book a photo slot to explore these narrow, otherworldly spaces filled with swirling rock formations and dramatic beams of light. Or head north of the border into Utah and check out the Toadstool Hoodoos!

For a more water-focused experience, Lake Powell offers boat tours, kayaking, and even opportunities to take a swim or set up a private picnic on the shore. Feeling a bit more adventurous? Alstrom Point provides Mars-like landscapes and an epic backdrop for your vows. While it requires an offroad drive and a manageable hike, the payoff (and the views!) are well worth it.

A wedding elopement couple walking through California redwoods

Redwoods, California

The ancient redwoods are among the most awe-inspiring backdrops you’ll find. These towering trees, some over 2,000 years old, create a serene, cathedral-like atmosphere.

The redwoods are also one of the best elopement locations because they’re so accessible. Trails like the Lady Bird Johnson Grove or Stout Grove are flat and easy to navigate. For a truly magical experience, plan your elopement during golden hour, when sunlight streams through the forest canopy.

Consider pairing your redwoods adventure with a visit to the nearby Southern Oregon Coast for an unforgettable combination of forest and sea – the combination of Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park and Samuel H Boardman Scenic Corridor straddling the border is one of my favorite elopement locations of all time. It’s pure magic.

Permits, Marriage Licenses, and Leave No Trace

Before planning your elopement, be sure to handle the logistics:

  • Permits: Most national parks and iconic locations require a special use permit. Apply as early as possible to secure your spot – at least six weeks out, but many spots fill up months in advance.
  • Marriage Licenses: Some states require you to get your marriage license in the same county as your ceremony, while others don’t. Hire an elopement photographer who provides planning guidance to help you navigate these requirements.
  • Leave No Trace: Always follow Leave No Trace principles. Stay on designated trails, pack out trash, and preserve the natural beauty of your chosen location so people can continue to get married in these places.

Symbolic Ceremonies

If you want to focus entirely on the emotional connection of your day, a symbolic ceremony is a fantastic option. This allows you to legally tie the knot beforehand (or afterward) and have a completely stress-free, intimate elopement experience. While not often talked about, they’re very common in the elopement world, especially if you want to elope solo in a location that requires witnesses for your marriage license (aka most places). It’s also really popular with couples who want to elope abroad or in locations with tricky logistics.

Road-Trip Elopements

Love variety, seeing the sights, and the magic of the open road? A road-trip elopement is perfect for you! Instead of staying in one spot, you can visit multiple locations throughout the day. Drive from one beautiful destination to the next, creating a dynamic and adventurous experience that’s super unique.
